The Asociacion Española Contra el Cancer

The Asociacion Española Contra el Cancer, known more commonly as ‘A.E.C.C.’ or ‘Contra Cancer’, is an independent, self funding national charity. The local branch in Torrevieja, which is run by a mixed Spanish and British committee, is situated in Calle Torrevejenses Ausentes, 33, between the Queen Burger Bar and the Plaza Oriente. The primary objective is the prevention, by early detection, of three cancers. These are breast, cervix and prostate. To find out more about the ‘A.E.C.C.’ or to make an appointment for screening, please visit the office, Wednesdays from 9.30am. At the present time we have more appointments available which cuts down waiting time. The A.E.C.C. Torrevieja branch, is also heavily involved in the running of a ‘Mobile Unit’, which is dedicated to caring for the cancer related terminally ill, whilst at the same time, they are able to also give counseling to family members The ‘Mobile Unit’, which has three specialists on hand at all times, is available to all living in the Vega Baja region and is controlled by the ‘Oncology Unit’ of the Elche General Hospital. The funding of the unit is the responsibility of the A.E.C.C. and without the donations from so many very generous private individuals, clubs and societies, this would be an impossible task. Being able to treat the terminally ill in their own homes, not only gives more comfort, and the security of knowing they are close to their loved ones, it also releases bed space in the  overloaded  Spanish National Health Hospitals.  If anyone has any pesetas which are no longer required or unwanted gifts which we could use for Tombola or raffle prizes these would be very much appreciated, if you can help please let us know.  For further information or to change appointments (Wednesday mornings only) please ring the office on 96 571 6679.

The Torrevieja branch covers all of this area, has almost 2,000 ladies and over 1,000 gentlemen per year participating in this scheme. The AECC is totally self-supporting with no funding from the government and the money comes solely from donations and fundraising by, not only a team of enthusiastic caring helpers, also from the many clubs and organisations in the area without whose support and donations we could not carry on. All AECC helpers work voluntarily and therefore all donations are able to be used exclusively for our health screening programme plus our "Care for the Terminally Ill at Home" programme. Below is an outline of the procedures and costs involved when registering for the screening programmes and forthcoming fund raising events. Please support us if you can. The AECC will be here to help you when you need help most.

Gentlemen:

You need to register in the office, which is open from 9.30am Wednesday mornings. Two appointments and two different clinics are involved, both being in Torrevieja. All paperwork will be provided, i.e. an introduction slip and a map for easy guidance for both clinics. The first appointment, which is for a blood test, will take place on a Wednesday morning. Your results will be collected by the AECC and will be waiting for you the next Wednesday when you visit the next clinic to see the Doctor. This appointment is always at 4.15 pm. For your first visit to this clinic you will be asked to fill in your medical history. The Doctor for your physical examination will be Dr Jimenez, a specialist Urologist, retained by the A.E.C.C. who is respected as an expert in matters associated with cancers of the prostate. Doctor Jimenez will tell you your results there and then. A volunteer interpreter is always on hand to assist. The cost of the screening to the AECC is 78 Euros and a donation of a minimum of 50% is asked for, from you, towards the cost. A receipt will be given for all donations. If you have to cancel your appointment please phone Jackie on 96 672 2358 for this purpose only.

Ladies:

You need to register in the office which is open from 9.30am Wednesday mornings. You will be placed on the next available waiting list and you will need to telephone the office, or call in, on the FIRST WEDNESDAY of that month to find out the exact day/date of your appointment. This is very important as failure to do this could mean that you may miss your appointment and be placed on the list for a later month.
You will be supplied with all the paperwork required for your visit to the clinic in Alicante. This includes an introduction slip for the receptionist at the clinic, a personal medical history sheet (which you need to complete with as much information as is possible - using the back of the sheet if necessary) and a detailed map to guide you easily to the clinic. Your appointment time at the clinic is always 9am and the procedure is as follows:-
The doctor will first examine your breasts followed by a smear test and examination of the pelvic area. If he feels it is necessary then he will also perform an Ecografia (scan) as well. From there you will be asked to wait until your name is called for the Mammogram. After you have had your mammogram please wait at the clinic until your name is called to inform you that it is alright for you to leave. The results of your screening will be posted to your home address. The cost of the screening to the AECC is 120 euros and a donation of a minimum of 50% is asked for towards the cost. A receipt will be given at the time of making the donation.

Health is too important to risk.
Don't let the current financial crisis make you leave your health to chance. For a small donation to the Associacion´s funds the AECC (Associacion Española Contra el Cancer) can provide you with the three most important health checks. For women they can provide breast cancer screening using the latest technology and cervical cancer screening. For men they offer screening for prostate cancer.
Taking advantage of these three easy and quick health checks could save your life. Isn't that worth a few euros?

If you need to cancel your appointment for any reason then please phone Jackie on 966 722 358 or 966 709 927 for this purpose only.
